Other SectionsCommentariesThe following are examples of commentaries from series of commentaries that include the New Testament. Each book entry is just an example. For other volumes in the series, follow the series link.
You will want to select a commentary that is appropriate to your particular task, whether that is personal study, preaching, in-depth exegesis, Bible study in the original languages, or devotional reading.
Some categories of commentaries are:
- Devotional
Normally I include the word "devotional" in the descriptive paragraph. Devotional commentaries do not focus on history or on linguistic and literary considerations but rather go right to application. The Daily Study Bible series is a good example of a devotional commentary set.
- Exegetical
These are designed for more serious Bible study, and concentrate on the background, historical and literary interests. The New International Commentary on the New Testament is a good example.
- Critical
Focuses on critical issues, and generally uses the historical critical method to one extent or another. The International Critical Commentary is a good example.
- Original Language
I normally add this comment to some other category, but in some cases, the best thing to say is that a commentary is based on the Hebrew text, for example. Under this heading, it is important to note whether knowledge of the original languages is required (Revelation in the ICC, for example) or just helpful (Various volumes of the Anchor Bible series).
You may want to look at one volume of a commentary series before going crazy about buying a number of them. Some series I am very anxious to own or at least to get via interlibrary loan. Others are not so important. With commentaries, let the buyer beware!
